New research shows that the FDA approved sweetener, Xylitol, can help prevent tooth decay in babies and toddlers. According to Reuters Health, giving the syrup to young children prevented early childhood cavities to baby teeth. Baby bottle syndrome, where teeth decay because of prolonged exposure to juices or milk, occurs most frequently in low-income families, and discovering this option may eliminate early tooth decay that can cause severe teeth problems later in life. More research is continuing to be done to find out exactly how Xylitol works and how it can be used as a preventive measure.
