Playpen: Life-saver or ‘little prison’?

What’s your opinion on playpens?  I use one with Kadin everyday… he’s 18 months, but I put him in it whenever I need to do stuff around the house and I can’t keep an eye on him.  It’s actually one of those play yard things, so it’s bigger than a playpen, but still–I use it, and I don’t think it’s damaging him at all…
