In honor of heroine Rose Valland…

I’d like to thank Elizabeth Hudson for introducing me to this remarkable woman.  Since today is Veterans Day, this is a perfect opportunity to remember a woman who exemplifies true courage.  Here is an excerpt from the email Elizabeth sent me:

“As a woman, I found the story of Rose Valland to be intriguing and inspiring. This brave woman worked under the Nazis at the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris, and secretly recorded the movements of art they had stolen from private Jewish collections. Her records were instrumental in the eventual recovery of these great treasures.

Oftentimes I think it’s hard for women to become interested in or relate to a story about World War II, but this book offers a new perspective. Not only does it finally offer us a HEROINE of the war, but it also focuses on art and beauty instead of death and destruction. Additionally, Edsel included excerpts from the Monuments Men’s love letters home to their wives – truly beautifully written.”

Elizabeth is referring to the book “The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History” by Robert Edsel, that tells “the story of 9 men and 1 woman (Rose Valland) who gave up their careers, left their families, and risked their lives to rescue the hundreds of thousands of works of art stolen by Hitler and the Nazis during World War II.”  Thank you Elizabeth, for recognizing and sharing with us the story of a true American heroine.
