I remember watching Rainbow Brite cartoons when I was younger. She was this cute little doll-like character that went on fun adventures, and had equally colorful and cute adventureous friends. Well… next month, a newly updated Rainbow Brite doll will debut at Toys R’ Us and Target stores. She looks a lot different than the somewhat chubby Rainbow Brite I remember as a child.
The new Rainbow Brite appears taller, thinner, and a bit more sophisticated. Another thing I noticed is that the new Rainbow Brite doesn’t have an African-American (or any other ethnicity) friend like the original did. I’m sure that will change with time, but I can’t help but wonder if that was a conscious decision of the manufacturer or just simply an oversight. Whatever the case may be, I probably won’t be buying one of these new dolls anytime soon. Aside from the fact that I only have a son, I don’t find Rainbow Brite as fascinating as I did when I was younger. Go figure…
I loved Rainbow Brite as a kid and I prefer the cuter vintage version (same with Strawberry Shortcake). I don’t like the “vamping” of those beloved cartoon characters from my childhood.
They are bringing her back! That is so cool. I loved Rainbow Brite when I was a kid.
