Yesterday, I spent all day at the salon getting my hair done. Yep, I finally spent the time, and the money, to get my hair permanently straightened. If you don’t know, I am a “mixed chick,” half Hawaiian-half Black, and my hair has been difficult to manage my entire life. I’ve had relaxers, perms, presses, and other various methods of hair torture, all in an effort to get my hair to behave. I’ve had mild success with the methods mentioned above, but after a few months time, I found that my hair eventually ended up dry, damaged, and again, really difficult to manage and maintain.
I had been researching the Japanese Thermal Hair Straightening technique for several years now. But I was always afraid that it would just mess up my hair to the point that it would make me bald. I was afraid that my hair would be so damaged and so fried that I just kept putting the treatment off completely.
However, recently, I went through some emotionally painful things in my life and so I decided that the best thing for me to do was to change up my look. I wanted to do something drastic and major with my hair, so I figured now would be the perfect time for me to get the Yuko Hair Straightening treatment done. Ironically, I had quite a difficult time finding someone to do this in Las Vegas, so research very carefully if you plan on getting it done. Make sure you visit the salon first for a consultation and make sure the stylist you choose is licensed to perform this procedure.
I ultimately found a wonderful stylist named Georgia who did an amazing job with my hair. I met with her about a week before so she could see my hair and the texture. I have really, really thick curly hair, so I knew that getting this treatment done would be a challenge for any hairdresser. And I will be honest, I literally spent all day at the salon getting this done. She started on me at about 9:30 a.m. and I didn’t walk out of the salon until 5:30 p.m. Crazy, I know…
Here are some progression photos:
Overall, I am beyond happy that I got this done!!! I love the way my hair turned out and I highly recommend this to anyone who is dealing with hair issues similar to mine. What I love is that my hair will no longer be the frizzy, poofy, hard-to-manage nest that it once was. It will always be straight no matter what the weather and I can wash, blow dry, and flat-iron it in less than an hour and be out the door. LOVE!!!
Now, I know there are many “natural hair sistahs” out there who will probably think that I’m succumbing to the pressures of society to change my hair and make it different than what it is. And to that I say, think whatever you want, because for me this is what I want and this is what works. I cannot and do not want to deal with hours upon hours of “doing” my hair every week just to get it to look presentable. I don’t want to have to constantly rely on wigs, extensions, and various other hair enhancements to make my hair look good in a short amount of time. And quite frankly, as a single mom to a five year old boy, I just don’t want to spend that much time on my hair when I could be doing a myriad of other things.
So if you have been thinking about getting this done, I highly, highly recommend it. I couldn’t be happier with my results and my only regret is that I didn’t get it done sooner.
I will do an update in about three months or so and let you know how my hair is doing and how I take care of it. If you have any questions about this procedure, please leave them in the comments below!
